Southern MN Passion

Mission: Southern Minnesota Passion provides an individual off-season training program in a team atmosphere.  The program is made up of 3 teams: 2 tournament teams (U12 and U14) and a Prep team.  All participants train twice a week at the Sports Institute from April to August and have 15 hours of on-ice practice in addition to the Sports Institute training. The Sports Institute training consists of Speed, Power, and Agility exercises, stick handling and shooting practice, and video breakdown to stride production.  The Prep team participates in a local 3 v 3 league, a 3 v 3 tournament, and area scrimmages.  The tournament teams participate in 1 tournament a month for 4 months.

Philosophy: Hockey is the best sport on Earth.  Everyday should be fun, challenging, and rewarding for all participants.  Treat every girl fairly and with respect.  Make sure that players strive to do their best and improve everyday.  Winning will take care of itself when a successful process is achieved.

Ultimate Physical Goal: To be in the BEST shape of one’s life and build life long habits to maintain strength, power, endurance, and agility.

Ultimate Social Goal: To make life-long friendships, bond with own family, and experience all that the great sport of hockey has to offer.

Concepts and Education

  • Nutrition and good habits off ice
  • Conditioning and Speed, Power, and Agility at Sports Institute
  • Education during classroom discussions at the Sports Institute. Such as Weak side coverage and availability, back checking through the middle (open man is most dangerous) zone entry, regrouping, cycling, puck protection, etc.
  • Developing the physical skills to complete the tasks
  • 1 on 1, Creating the 2 on 1, Using the wall (boards)
  • Crash the net after the whistle
  • Angling and “Taking the Hands”
  • Slap Shots, snap shots, and quick release

Expectations for Players:

1. Take care of your body and your mind.  Get the sleep and nutrition you need to be successful.

2. Make good choices on and off the ice.

3. Be kind and respectful to those around you (teammates, coaches, refs, the other team, AND your family).

4. Be on time for team functions.  If you are going to be late or can't make it...call or email.

5. Locker Room Discipline. Bags tucked under benches, sticks in racks, jerseys hung.  When coaches come in to talk...mouths are closed and good eye contact is being made by all players.

6. Warm-ups are with your "warm-up buddies" No one gets left out of warm-ups.  Everyone does the warm-up.  Tennis shoes, team shorts, and t-shirts are required.  NO Ug boots, flip flops, or bare feet are allowed for warm-ups.

7. Cool Down is done as a team immediately after games that have games within 24 hours of one another.  (Remember to eat something ASAP after practice/game as well.)

8.  Coaches will have jerseys and pucks.  Players check all gear to make sure skates are sharp, helmets have screws, sticks are taped and ready, and water bottles are filled. Players take all sticks and water bottles to and from the bench.

9.  ALL equipment needs to come to the Sports Institute including sticks.  SI requires players to skate in bottom half of their gear.  Tennis shoes, team shorts, and t-shirts are required.  NO Ug boots, flip flops, or bare feet are allowed for any workouts.

10. Lead by the proper example and others will follow you.

Expectations for Parents:

1. Love your daughter unconditionally, and praise her for her hard work.

2. Make every effort to get your daughter to the practices/games/training sessions on time.

3. Cheer!

4. Be a positive, active part of the Southern MN Passion through organizing team socials or team building activities for our great program.

5. Trust the coaching staff with your daughter and believe that we are doing what is in the best interest of her and the program at all times.
